My first wedding that I shot. I was trying to get access to a steadicam, but to no avail. I used a tripod for the ceremony but everything else was handheld. I am still trying to work on my compressing skills. I made some file management errors whiles editing and became frustrated. This was shot on the Canon XH-A1 / although the compression doesn't do it justice. Song "Amber" by 311.

Devon,

I'd like to critique this video if you don't mind. It may sound harsh but my intention is to help.

Hand held is ok, but really you can’t afford to zoom in while in hand held mode unless you’re rock steady or have some other form of support.
You definitely need microphones to capture the vows (at least) because I couldn’t hear a thing and I’m sure as far as wedding videos go, this is a very important aspect of the whole thing.

Composition: There are a few things you need to keep in check when you compose you shots. In a few areas, I noticed that there was a lot of headroom. The last shot being a good example of this mistake. This happens because you’re so caught up in focusing on the subject that the subject’s face is in the middle of the frame. This type of composition gives a “beginner” feel to the video. So keep a check on the headroom and focus more on the composition of the shot. Due to the same issue (focusing on the face) the composition suffers as well because subjects end up in the middle of the frame.

Not sure if you know the aperture you were using, but it seems to me that the aperture was stopped down quite a bit. As a result, the picture quality suffers. Either that or you used CBR encoding rather than VBR 2 pass. They end result (picture quality) is very similar.

I think overall this was a very good attempt and kudus to you for doing so. Personally, I wouldn’t attempt something like a wedding myself (just don’t have the confidence).

Shiv covers A LOT of good stuff.

I enjoyed a few shots. I really liked the focus pull from the flowers to the blue dress... mostly because of the colors.

With the XHA1 you want to make sure you are set to 60i if you plan to do a lot of slo-mo like you have here.

Another thing to watch for when capturing is to make sure you set the capture settings to match the frame rate you filmed at if you intend on doing a slo-mo like you have here. I made the same mistake with my last video (though I did not intend to do any slo-mo before capture).

Got to have a lav mic for weddings. Start cheap with something from Radio Shack until you can get something a little nicer. Also, film, capture and edit as much as you can, even if you don't plan on using what you film. The more practice the better. Years from now you will look back at this video and see what Shiv is talking about.
